Leap Rail: Streamlining Operating Rooms

When a couple of hundreds of healthcare providers comprising doctors, nurses, and technologists convened for Grand Hack in MIT, they not only shared their profound insights with the community but also discussed the major pain-points they often encounter. One of the challenges that stood out among the many was that while operating rooms are dynamic and unpredictable, the tools leveraged for managing and optimizing them are painstakingly static, rendering lesser productivity and consuming more time. With an aim to confront the challenge head-on, Shayan Zadeh—a technology entrepreneur—and a small group of anesthesiologists and OR nurses proposed an award-winning solution in the congregation that could successfully assist healthcare staff in the rapidly changing OR ecosystem, which also marked the genesis of Leap Rail. “Leap Rail offers the best-in-class solutions that simplify the complexity of operating rooms with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, providing actionable and intelligent information to facilitate better decisions, improve operational efficiency, and drive staff satisfaction,” states Zadeh, founder and CEO of Leap Rail.

According to him, lack of predictability and visibility are two potent problems that affect the efficiency of operating room personnel. While case time duration, the span of operation, and time of a surgery serve as the most important attributes of surgeries, many healthcare organizations rely on estimates provided by EMRs for surgical planning that often turn out to be inaccurate. Leap Rail Board, the first in company’s  product suite, utilizes the potential of AI algorithms to offer 30 percent higher accuracy in surgical predictions. This improved accuracy equates to roughly 90 minutes of OR time for every 10 cases. Leap Rail Shift, the second product, is focused on surgical staff and provides real-time information for effective staff optimization. It enables the entire surgical team to determine when, where, and how they are needed throughout the day and notifies them of updated schedules and assignments that help them to be more productive. The third product—Leap Rail Analytics—offers a complete record of more than 20 major OR metrics, from case volumes to scheduling accuracy to suite and block utilization and much more, which are then utilized to orchestrate process improvement initiatives and foster a true data-driven culture.

Leap Rail endorses a unique approach to analyzing surgical data wherein all the relevant information is aggregated from existing surgical documentations or EMRs and is fed into the Leap Rail engine. Following that, Leap Rail offers AI recommendations in an intuitive and easy-to-use format for streamlining OR functions. Regarding integration, for board and shift products, Leap Rail can connect to any EMR system in real time through interoperable HL7 messaging which can be enabled in just a couple of weeks of support from IT and then the information garnered is brought to life using AI or machine learning. For analytics product, data from historical reports are loaded into the Leap Rail system which then provides the required analytics without any additional integration.

Zadeh illustrates the efficacy of Leap Rail by citing an instance wherein a hospital was constantly combating the challenge of a significant number of add-on surgery cases. They barely had any visibility or predictability in OR environment and banked on static surgical board which failed to provide updated information on the operations. With the assistance of Leap Rail, the hospital gained significantly enhanced predictability and accuracy on their view of resources that helped them to efficiently allocate and accommodate requests from surgeons in the add-on cases. “Now they are more proactive with the resources with a better functioning surgical staff, and can accommodate more cases for their surgeons,” says Zadeh.

Scripting similar success stories, Leap Rail aims to introduce more features, combining better communication with the AI. “We pride in being in tune with our customers and executing on their needs in a timely fashion,” extols Zadeh.
